“The best thing about being a DJ is making people happy. There is nothing like seeing people get up from a table to dance or the expression on their face when they hear a song they love.”

About

Emilio Del Canto is a first-generation Canadian with a diverse musical background and upbringing. Since his humble beginnings in Saskatoon, Canada, Emilio has forged himself into a prominent DJ, producer, entrepreneur, and event promoter in the Canadian music industry. He presently operates at the helm of his event companies Foundation House Music and The Treehouse Series in synergy with other artists, and actively releases tracks via Beats Union as well as other underground music distribution platforms. Emilio’s passion for music always shines through in his work and is held at the forefront of his endeavors.

Music

During his early years, Emilio held a residency at Kass Night Club in Benin, West Africa, and has more recently toured and performed across Canada, the US, and as far South as Mexico and Nicaragua. The influence of his travel and his Chilean roots have resulted in an exciting fusion of musical styles that incorporate an array of tropical, Latin, and tribal-based rhythms as well as deep, soulful melodies, chord progressions, and vocals. The melodic and cultural components of his music are complimented by an expertly integrated range of House Music, Bass Music and other contemporary music genres. The refined skill he possesses is attributed to decades of music collection, research, and artistic development.

Performance

In performance, Emilio is never afraid to break the mold and explore beyond the expected. His musical spontaneity is balanced by the technical finesse he exhibits behind the decks and in the studio. Instinctually responsive to the dynamic ebb and flow of a dance floor, he is able to connect intimately with his audience through his music and effortlessly manipulates the energy throughout his sets. He pours his heart and soul into his craft, and can always be seen playing out, writing tracks, throwing events, and making moves to spread the music he loves.

Audio Frequency Spectrum

A brief science of sound

Sound is measured using the following two variables:

Volume (dB): Decibels (dB) measured the vertical chart axis is the unit of measurement that is used to determine amount of sound energy (volume) that is output from any given source. Sound energy is generated from vibrations that travel through the air from one point to another. The higher the dB of a sound, the louder it is.

Examples:

  • Near-total silence – 0 dB
  • A whisper – 15 dB
  • A library – 45 dB
  • A normal conversation – 60 dB
  • A toilet flushing 75-85 dB
  • A noisy restaurant – 90 dB
  • A baby crying – 110 dB
  • A jet engine – 120 dB

Frequency (Hz): Frequencies are measured in hertz (Hz) which is the horizontal axis in the chart. Hz refers to the number of oscillations of a sound vibration within a one second interval. 10 Hz would mean that a vibration oscillates 10 times within a 1 second interval. 1 kHz means that a vibration oscillates 1000 times in a one second interval.

Frequency ranges:

Low-range frequencies (Bass) fall in the 0 Hz – 200 Hz range. Kick drums and bass guitars generally fall in this frequency range.

Mid-range frequencies (Mids) fall in the 100 Hz – 1000 Hz (1kHz) range. Vocals, strings, hand-percussion like toms, bongos, congas, as well as guitar generally fall in this frequency range.

High-range frequencies (Treble) fall in the 1 kHz – 20 kHz range. High-pitched vocals, strings, hihats, cymbals, snares generally fall in this frequency range.

RGB Waveform:

The colors and shades in an RGB waveform correspond directly to the colors in low, mid and high frequencies in the audio frequency spectrum chart above.  This can be used in Djing to identify which frequency knob to adjust during a mix.
